Breaking News: GlaxoSmithKline Plc’s Avandia, once the world’s best-selling diabetes drug, will be withdrawn from the market in Europe and sales will be limited in the U.S. because of an increased risk of heart attacks.
According to a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Avandia can significantly increase the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular-related death, particularly in patients with a history of heart disease. Shortly after the report surfaced, the FDA issued a safety alert urging patients taking Avandia to speak with their doctors about other treatment options.

Avandia Background
Avandia (rosiglitazone) is a widely prescribed medication used to treat Type-2 Diabetes, a condition commonly known as Adult-Onset Diabetes. More than six million patients worldwide have been prescribed the drug. Avandia generates approximately $3.2 billion in annual sales for its manufacturer GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).
Avandia Heart Attack
Doctors began to back away from Avandia in 2007 after the drug was linked to a high risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious problems.
Since then, Avandia’s label has included a ‘black box’ warning detailing its association with life-threatening heart conditions. The warning was added after a meta-analysis of 42 clinical trails showed that patients taking Avandia had a 43-percent higher risk of having a heart attack than those taking other diabetes medications.
What did GSK know?
According to a Senate committee report released in February 2010, GSK knew of the heart attack risks for years but worked to keep them from the public. The Senate committee conducted the investigation due to concerns that Avandia put “public safety at risk because the FDA has been too cozy with drug makers and has been regularly outmaneuvered by companies that have a financial interest in downplaying or under-exploring potential safety risks,” the report states.
